The Year of Empathy

The Year of Empathy

As this year draws close, deep within, I reflect upon the myriad of connections, lessons learned, and the incremental growth occurring over the past twelve months. This past year has served as an authentic blueprint of empathy- a challenge to find that delicate balance between work and personal life while teaching valuable means of resilience and self-care to maintain mental and emotional well-being.

Empathy remains the crux of my practice. Perhaps more than ever, in the recent past year, a greater need for connectedness has emerged. Regardless of whether across a screen or the room, the silences during sessions have very often soothed the stormy waters of personal struggle. The connections keep pushing the wheel of healing with my clients, allowing me more profound insight into humanness and developing a deeper capacity for compassion and patience.

Trying to keep everyone’s needs balanced, including my clients and the important people in my life, is best described as a juggling act. This year has brought strain and satisfaction with being such a sounding board or pillar. Constant adjustment and willingness to reassess priorities will be necessary to navigate this dynamic effectively. Yet even with the challenges, such a balance ensures a continuous, caring service provision while safeguarding one’s mental health.

There is an intrinsic risk of emotional burnout with this job. This year, I have felt the need for a steady self-care routine and the development of resilience practices. This involves knowing my limits, setting boundaries, and ensuring that my support networks are solid and active. My self-care will range from daily rituals to well-structured intervention means such as seeking peer support and supervision. Building resilience is intrinsic to surviving and thriving sustainably in a challenging profession. We can all navigate successfully.

Growth is a part of any career, but it happens personally and professionally for me. This has been quite an eventful year with learning and growth, picking up new therapeutic techniques and taking something back from each session. Such growth opportunities make me even more effective as a therapist. All this instils excellent personal satisfaction and happiness, motivating me to advance in this challenging yet rewarding profession.

Every year has its challenges and victories, and this year has been no exception – from world events that bring uncertainty into our lives to small victories regarding client progress. So often, making it through adversity yields incredible results, be it breakthrough realisations during the therapy sessions with my clients or even crisis management lessons learned.

Each year of practice has its gems of lessons that remind me that my field is ever-changing. In this transformation journey, the most important teachings have been the rate of change, patience, and humility. Therefore, the limitations of my knowledge continue to be the foundation of lifelong learning ineffective therapy.

As I begin yet another year, the reflections from all past experiences continue to serve as my guiding light. Appreciating the good times and the bad puts me in a position to approach the opportunities of the future time with a new sense of commitment to empathy, balance, self-care, and growth. This mindfulness will help me further inspire and empower myself and those in my service.
