Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy uses focused relaxation to work with habits and responses that sit below everyday awareness, the things you can describe clearly but cannot seem to think your way out of. It is commonly used for anxiety, sleep, confidence, unwanted habits and specific fears. You are not unconscious and you are not out of control at any point. You stay aware throughout, you can stop whenever you wish, and nothing happens that you have not agreed to first. Sessions are one to one with Kingsley, a member of the National Hypnotherapy Society, and last 45 minutes. Hypnotherapy here sits alongside counselling: the practice is integrative, so hypnotherapy can stand alone or weave into wider therapeutic work. Fees: a hypnotherapy session lasts 45 minutes and costs £100 by secure video, or £120 in person in South Shields. If you would prefer to talk things through first, an Initial Consultation is 45 minutes at £75. See all fees. Your first session starts with an ordinary conversation: what you want to change, how hypnotherapy works, and any questions you have. Only then, and only when you are comfortable, do we move into the guided relaxation itself. You stay aware and in control throughout.

How hypnotherapy can help

Hypnotherapy uses focused relaxation to help you make changes that are hard to reach in ordinary conversation, with things like anxiety, sleep, confidence and unwanted habits. It is gentle and collaborative, and can be used on its own or alongside talking therapy.

Who it helps

Hypnotherapy here is for adults who can name the pattern they want to change but find it does not shift through willpower alone. It is commonly used for anxiety, sleep difficulties, confidence, unwanted habits and specific fears. It can stand on its own or run alongside counselling, and if you are not sure which fits better, that is exactly the sort of question the Initial Consultation is for.

What to expect

Sessions are 45 minutes, in person in South Shields or by secure video. We begin by talking through what you want to work on, then move into focused relaxation. You are not asleep and you are not out of control at any point: you stay aware throughout, you can stop whenever you wish, and nothing is suggested that has not been agreed with you beforehand. Most sessions end with practical techniques you can use between appointments, so the benefit is not confined to the session itself.

How we work

The hypnotherapy practised here is solution focused: gentle, collaborative and led by you. Rather than dwelling on everything that is wrong, sessions build towards how you want things to be and the steps that support that. Kingsley is an Accredited Member of the National Hypnotherapy Society, and hypnotherapy can be combined with the integrative talking therapy offered across the practice.

If you would like to start, you can book an Initial Consultation (£75) through the booking page, or send an enquiry using the form below.

When hypnotherapy is not offered

Hypnotherapy is safe for most adults, but it is not right for everyone, and Marking Therapy follows NHS guidance on this. Hypnotherapy is not offered to anyone who has schizophrenia or a history of psychosis, or who has epilepsy. It is not used to diagnose or treat physical symptoms: if a physical symptom is part of what brings you here, you are asked to see your GP first, and hypnotherapy never replaces medical care or prescribed medication. If you are already under the care of a psychiatrist or another specialist, hypnotherapy is offered only alongside that care and, with your permission, after contact with them. Sessions do not go ahead if you arrive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and hypnotherapy is not used to recover memories. If any of this applies to you, say so at booking or at the Initial Consultation: counselling may still be a good fit, and where it is not, the practice will say so and suggest where to go instead.

Fees

Hypnotherapy sessions last 45 minutes and cost £100 by secure video, or £120 in person in South Shields. Full fees for every service are on the fees page.

Common questions

Will I be aware of what is happening?

Yes. Hypnotherapy is not sleep and it is not loss of control. You stay aware throughout and can stop at any time.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what you are working on. We talk this through at the start, and there is no fixed commitment.

Can it be combined with counselling?

Yes. Many people use hypnotherapy alongside talking therapy, and we can shape the two around what suits you.

Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone?

No. Following NHS guidance it is not offered where there is schizophrenia, a history of psychosis or epilepsy, and physical symptoms go to your GP first. The section above explains this, and the Initial Consultation is the place to talk it through.

Deep Relaxation

Sessions begin with focused relaxation, which makes it easier to notice and work with responses that are hard to reach in ordinary conversation.

Changing Unhelpful Habits

Work is aimed at unwanted habits and automatic reactions, and at putting steadier patterns in their place.

Managing Anxiety and Stress

Practical techniques you can use outside the session, so the benefit is not confined to the 45 minutes you spend in the session.

You Stay in Control

You remain aware throughout, you can stop at any point, and nothing is suggested that has not been agreed with you beforehand.

If you would like to talk it through before committing, the Initial Consultation is a good place to start. Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for urgent care: if you need help now, please contact your GP, call NHS 111, or call 999 in an emergency.

Everyone is welcome here. Marking Therapy is an inclusive, affirming practice for people of every background, ethnicity, culture, faith, gender, sexuality and relationship style. Sessions are for adults aged 18 and over.
